Aging in Place: The Time to Plan is Now

Aging is out of your control. How you handle it, though, is in your hands. — Diane von Furstenberg By 2030, the number of older adults in the U.S. is expected to hit nearly 71 million. People are living longer than ever before and as a consequence, the amount of their lives they’ll spend needing care is increasing. It’s estimated that 70 percent of these Americans will need assistance at some point in their life. Because of this, people are thinking more and more about the idea of  “aging in place.” With 9 out of 10 Americans planning to stay in their home for as long as possible, aging in place has become the most common goal among the baby boomer generation. Unfortunately, many Americans are failing to prepare enough for this to be a viable outcome. The lack of preparation is due to many reasons, but one common misconception is that aging in place is reserved for the very elderly. Cheers to Growing Older and Our Elders on Senior Citizens Day

Senior Citizens Day gives us the chance to celebrate our elders and show appreciation for their sacrifices and all they have taught us members of younger generations! This national observance taking place tomorrow reminds us of the adage “growing older is a privilege denied to many” and gives us every reason to embrace the process of aging and celebrate the achievements and wisdom that come with years of experience. One of the best things about growing older is becoming a master of “the zinger,” as Ronald Reagan demonstrated during the second presidential debate with Walter Mondale on Oct. 21, 1984. Age had become an issue during Reagan’s reelection campaign and was viewed then as a vulnerability. During the debate, Reagan fielded this pointed question from debate panelist and Baltimore Sun reporter Henry Trewhitt: “You already are the oldest President in history, and some of your staff say you were tired after your most recent encounter with Mr. Mondale. I recall, yes, that Preside

What Are the Most Important Vaccines for Seniors?

Nothing like a global pandemic to drive home the point during National Immunization Awareness Month that for seniors, the difference between life and death could be a simple injection. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in early June that hospitalizations and deaths have fallen dramatically among older adults age 65 and up following the rollout of Covid-19 vaccines. Last year, 8 in 10 deaths attributed to coronavirus were adults 65 and older. The availability of vaccines has improved vastly over recent weeks, with data showing that 89 percent of Americans age 65 and up have received at least one dose. While the intense focus on coronavirus continues, we shouldn’t forget that flu and pneumonia still rank among the top health concerns for the elderly. Flu and pneumonia combine to rank ninth on the list of leading causes of death for those over 65 , according to the CDC. These are common diseases in older adults—sometimes triggered by cardiopulmonary disease, diabe

Baby Boomers Live Longer but Have Poorer Health

By the year 2030, the last of the baby boomers – the 78 million Americans born after World War II between 1946 and 1964 – will be turning 65. According to the Schaeffer Center of Health Policy and Economics at the University of Southern California, the average U.S. life expectancy for 65-year-olds will rise 20.1 years in 2030. (Although covid deaths in 2020 caused a drop by 1.5 years). Even those with disabilities are expected to extend their lives by up to 8.6 years. Despite the fact that baby boomers are projected to live longer lives than their parents, they will likely be less healthy, researchers say. By the year 2030, the typical Medicare beneficiary over 65 will be more likely to suffer from obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease, and be disabled than those in 2010, the Schaeffer Center report said. This new generation of seniors are expected to number over 67 million, which will more than double current Medicare costs, increasing to $1.2 trillion by 2030. Due to the lon

How to identify eldercare needs for your parents staying alone?

Today, a lot of elders stay alone for various reasons. Among these reasons, most often it is having no work-life balance or a distant job where the children cannot live with their parents in the same city or make a visit to check on them, etc. Old age comes with many problems— their movement gets restricted, their social life takes a downfall, they do not have energy for day-to-day activities, and their need for medical assistance increases. In this case, when the elderlies become dependent on others, a home-care service or a care center becomes an option for those children who can’t cope with their work-life and care-taking processes. Now the main question arises, “When does one realize that an independent older person needs help?” There are few signs which might indicate that eldercare is needed for those seniors who are living alone, such as: Outstanding bills: Aging results in cognitive impairment and forgetfulness .  There are times when they forget what they have said o
