Substance Abuse and Addiction in Elderly – How Does Counselling Benefit Senior Citizens?

As surprising as it may sound, substance abuse among the elderly, particularly of alcohol and prescription drugs, is a fast-growing health problem in India. With a rise in the ageing population and changing demographics, the proportion of elderly substance users is gradually increasing.

Due to insufficient knowledge and limited awareness of the issue, substance abuse in the elderly often goes unnoticed. This is made worse by the fact that the symptoms of substance abuse and addiction are often similar to other common medical conditions such as dementia, diabetes and depression.

Identification of Addiction in Elderly

Fortunately, with Samvedna’s elder care family counselling services, caregivers can understand how to identify substance abuse and addiction in older adults. Even though addiction can be difficult to recognize in this demographic, it is important to pay attention to the signs and symptoms of addiction displayed by the elderly. Some of the signs of addiction include

  • Change in eating and sleeping habits
  • Irritability and depression
  • Unexplained chronic pain
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Memory loss
  • Intentional social isolation
  • Lack of interest in activities
  • Alienating loved ones
  • Reduced interest in personal grooming

Drug and alcohol abuse can prevent a person from taking good care of themselves. Many forms of substance abuse can also worsen other conditions such as depression and cognitive impairment that many elderly individuals already struggle with.

Early recognition of substance abuse can reduce the chances of addiction-related adverse health effects. It can help family members or care providers get help more quickly for the person in need. Without help, the quality of life and health of substance abusing elderly can deteriorate rapidly. With Samvedna’s caregiver counselling, family members can learn to recognize the signs of addiction and save their loved elderly from potential substance use disorders.

Risk factors for Substance Abuse in the Elderly

One of the main reasons for addiction in the elderly is the fact that they are often retired and no longer in the workforce, they may be living alone or far from family members and their personal social circle may be dwindling. This kind of social isolation makes them more susceptible to alcohol and drugs addiction. Besides this, health-related issues and life-changing events can take an emotional toll on the elderly and can provoke substance-abusing behaviour. If not treated in time, this can result in a full-scale addiction.

At first, substance abuse may start innocently enough, as elderly individuals tend to abuse prescription drugs to reduce age-related physical pains or emotional difficulties. Senior citizens may turn to drugs and alcohol to cope with mental or physical distress arising from illness, chronic pain or a big life change such as the death of a spouse or a loved one.

How can old age counselling help in the prevention of substance use disorders in the elderly?

Since most cases of addiction in the elderly arise from a negative emotional state, senior citizen counselling is one of the most effective ways of preventing addictions.  Counselling makes dealing with negative emotional states a lot more treatable.  Samvedna Care’s professional counsellors hold advanced degrees in psychology and are trained to help clients identify potential solutions to problems that cause emotional turmoil. The Connection Between Aging, Exercise, and Healthy Lungs

Enjoying a long and healthy retirement requires taking good care of yourself. While many people focus on living a heart-smart lifestyle, taking proactive steps to maintain healthy lungs is essential, too. As we age, the lungs become weaker and less flexible. This can contribute to a variety of diseases and chronic health conditions. According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute , lung-related illnesses are the 3rd leading cause of death in this country. That includes lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and asthma—adding up to nearly 235,000 deaths a year. Here are a few tips you can use to keep your lungs healthy: Stop smoking. Talk with your primary care physician about smoking cessation programs. Avoid secondhand smoke. Research shows it can be just as deadly as being a smoker. Stay away from harsh chemicals. It’s important to avoid breathing in damaging fumes (e.g., home cleaners and weed killers). Prevent infections. Many infections can lead to

How You Can Join the Fight Against Alzheimer’s

World Alzheimer’s Month in September is an opportunity to raise awareness about this complex disease and to challenge the stigmas surrounding dementia. Launched in 2012, the awareness month spotlights the fact that 2 out of every 3 people globally believe there is little understanding of dementia in their countries. More than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia and it is the 6 th leading cause of death in the US, according to the Alzheimer’s Association’s annual report. With the senior population growing quickly, Alzheimer’s and dementia cases will continue to increase as well, unless researchers can find a cure. This upcoming Monday, Sept. 21, is World Alzheimer’s Day, a call to action for all of us to educate ourselves on how to take preventative steps, identify symptoms and support loved ones who have been diagnosed. Film Screening at Samvedna Senior Care

On 30th September, 2019, Samvedna Senior Care Foundation hosted the 2nd film festival of generations in association with Heidelberg University, Germany. The film Sputnik Moment – 30 years and beyond was screened at our senior citizen centre in Gurgaon for our members and staff. The film highlighted how senior citizens in Germany and the US were taking up second careers to fill their time, engage meaningfully and also get support through additional income. Post the screening Dr. Martin Gieselmann, Executive Secretary, SAI, Heidelberg University and Dr. Constanze, Coordinator DAAD Project, Heidelberg University along with our team engaged with the audience in an interesting discussion on the Indian scenario. Members shared that in India it is not easy for senior citizens to pick up jobs after retirement, however it was interesting to see that many in the audience did have jobs post retirement. They also spoke about stereotypes and social attitudes towards ageing and shared their per
