One of the things the CDC recommends is that people sterilize surfaces in their homes each day. When you go through your parent’s home cleaning for them, are you forgetting any surfaces? Sometimes in the rush to clean, some household items are forgotten. These are the rooms and items you need to sanitize regularly.
Bathroom
Most people think of the toilet, sink handles, and sink when they’re sanitizing surfaces. When was the last time you wiped down the light switches, shower/tub knobs, and hairdryer handle and switches. You should clean your toothbrush handle and sanitize the head in hydrogen peroxide daily. You should also wipe down regularly-used beauty products.
If your parents have a shower curtain, you should wash that with the towels. Use a bleach bathroom cleaner to wipe down the liner when you clean the tub or shower.
Bedroom
Ideally, sheets need to be washed weekly. If your parents are sick, they should be washed more often. While the sheets wash, vacuum the mattress or wipe down a mattress cover. If possible, let the pillows sit in the sun and air out. Spray them with a fabric disinfectant spray to kill germs.
Wipe remotes, radio and alarm clock controls, and lamp controls. Closet lights and dresser handles also need to be wiped down. If there is exercise equipment in the bedroom, wipe the seat, handles, and controls on those.
Kitchen
The kitchen may be the one room where you regularly sanitize most items. You might not be missing anything in here. Make sure you’re sanitizing appliance buttons, knobs, and levers. Sanitize light switches and cabinet handles. Sanitize handles on teapots, coffeepots, and sink sprayers.
Living Room/Family Room
Remotes are probably used daily. They need to be sanitized each day. If your parents use buttons on a DVD player or TV, sanitize those. Also sanitize buttons on space heaters, air purifiers, computers, keyboards, and cabinet handles. If your parents have heated massage recliners or chairs, wipe down the controls for those seats. Finish up by wiping down cell phones, tablets, and e-readers.
What if you can’t go clean for your parents? If they have a hard time with housekeeping and you’re following stay-at-home orders, you can hire caregivers to clean for them. Caregivers will clean and sterilize, do the laundry, run errands, and make sure your parents have the things they need when they’re self-isolating. Call a home care agency to make arrangements.
